SIG Membership Application

The Oncology Nursing Society is a national organization of more than 33,000 registered nurses and other healthcare professionals dedicated to excellence in patient care, teaching, research and education in the field of oncology. A prime goal of ONS is to provide a network of peer support and exchange for oncology nurses. To do so, ONS introduced a formal structure of Special Interest Groups (SIG) to facilitate networking of ONS members in an identified subspecialty area. The Spiritual Care SIG was established in 1990.

Spiritual Care SIG Mission Statement

  • Support the exchange of information, experiences and ideas related to both the spiritual care of the person with an actual or potential diagnosis of cancer and to the spiritual care of his or her family.
  • Foster the formulation of new ideas and knowledge related to spiritual care through dialogue and research.
Goals
  • Promote communication among SIG members.
  • Promote education of SIG members, the ONS membership-at-large, and non-members.
  • Recruit and retain members.
  • Collaborate with other SIGs.
  • Develop ONS leaders within the SIG membership.

Activities

The Spiritual Care SIG has chosen to fulfill its mission through activities such as integrating clinical, administrative, educational and research ideas into their newsletter, and facilitating networking among SIG members, as well as, exploring opportunities for joint newsletters with interested SIGs. They are exploring the possibility of developing a self-study module for practicing oncology nurses on providing spiritual care. They are also exploring the concept of guidelines for clinical practice and education, developing educational topics for presentation at the ONS Annual Congress and Institutes of Learning, authoring a self-study module on spiritual care, and creating a spiritual care resource area in ONS Website.

Benefits/Communication

The SIG meets once per year during the ONS Annual Congress. Spiritual Care SIG leaders regularly communicate with SIG members through written communiques and through a quarterly newsletter. The newsletter features timely articles on topics related to enhancing the spiritual care of patients with cancer and their families, practice tips, a message from SIG leaders, and reports on SIG activities and projects.

Membership Requirements

All SIG members must be members in good standing of the national Oncology Nursing Society. ONS members receive one free SIG membership. Additional SIG memberships are $15 each.
